Shawn Brooks

Born in Iowa in 1970, I found bikes to be amazing gift of independence. I brought my first nice road bike in 1980, a Fuji Sagres with ValLite Tubing and 12 speeds! That bike was with me all the way through college and took me everywhere I needed to go and probably a few places I didn’t need to. While in college (University of Iowa, B.S., Psychology, 1992) I was swept up in the mountain bike boom and the hook was set for life.

After graduation, I evacuated -80 degree wind chill temps in Iowa and headed toward Arizona with little more than would fit in the tiniest U-Haul and some hope. I found employment at BikeChalet in Mesa and was fortunate to find tutelage under some of the best in the business. I still owe a great deal to Warren and Russ Hickman, Doug Roether, Mike Wetzler and Posthumous thanks to Mercedes Heinrich and Bannister Allen. I wouldn’t be where I am without their help.

Since starting The Cycologist LLC in July of 1998, I have made it my mission to change the level of expectation with regard to service. I have added a few certifications to my resume in order to better serve my clients.

  • In 1994 I became Fit Kit Certified. The scientific Foundation of Bike Fit.
  • In 1999 I incorporated the concepts developed by Paul Swift, Andy Pruitt. MD, and Vint Schoenfeld who addressed specific medical problems and examined perfecting pedaling dynamics.
  • In 2003, I became Certified as a CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) which certifies and insures me to coach the strength and conditioning aspect of any sport in all 50 states. This was a certification that I undertook mainly as a way to further my understanding of biomechanics and physiology related to fitting, but has given me a depth of knowledge that goes far beyond that.
  • In 2006, I became certified as a BioMechanics Specialist by the National Endurance and Strength Trainers Association.
  • In 2007 I became certified as a Julstro Specialist, a program of self-stretching and massage techniques to treat repetitive motion injuries.
  • 2006, Joined the Serotta International Cycling Institute, connecting me with the foremost experts and researchers in the sport.
  • In 2007, became certified as a Serotta Fit Specialist
  • I am certified as a USA Cycling Coach.
  • I am First Aid, CPR and Wilderness First Aid Certified, and Wilderness Survival Certified

Finally, I have built my experience performing thousands of fittings and building hundreds of custom bikes over the years.

Ryan Scalva

I was born in Northeastern Colorado. I moved to Fort Collins in the summer of 2004 to pursue my degree in Sports and Exercise Sciences with a focus in Sports Medicine (Colorado State University, B.S., Applies Sciences, 2007). This is where I developed my passion for cycling.

After being introduced to the sport by my uncle, I began to ride mountain bikes. I found the more I rode the more I became addicted. Even though I loved the sport I struggled with pain and injuries.

This led me to meet The Cycologist. After working with Shawn I began to understand the importance of a proper fit and bicycle equipment. I was very interesting in what he offered and apprenticed for The Cycologist during the summer of 2004. I began to learn the dynamics of all cycling and how interrelated my degree in Sports and Exercise Sciences was to the sport. This only increased my interest in cycling. I began to ride more and with Shawn’s help I developed skills in bicycle repair and mechanics. I also learned The Cycologist fitting skills and techniques. In concert with my degree, I began to develop my coaching skills related to the bicycling.

In Spring 2007 I was qualified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA CSCS). This has helped further my knowledge in biomechanics, coaching, and functional conditioning. I have raced in the Winter Park Mountain bike race series the past two summers. This has profoundly helped me to develop my riding and coaching skills and improved my understanding of the sport. Racing has heightened my understanding of how important properly maintained equipment, and structured training is to a person’s success.

  • I ride and coach mountain, road, commuter, and the unicycle.
  • I am First Aid, CPR and Wilderness Survival Certified.

I enjoy teaching and coaching the sport of cycling and making individuals more comfortable physically and mentally on their bike of choice. I believe any type of cycling is part of the solution to a healthier, happier, and more sustainable society.
